Kangaroos-

There is a very good reason that some people believe the Jersey Devil to be nothing more than a kangaroo.  This idea is mostly caused by a mix-up with an incident that actually occurred during the phenomenal week.  In a scheme to turn a profit and generate entertainment via mockery, several individuals had strapped bronze wings to a kangaroo and painted green stripes onto it.  They then proceeded to charge 10 cents admittance to a side show claiming that they had captured the “Leeds Devil” (see promotional pic in Jersey Devil Photos area).  At the end of the show it was said a costumed man jumped up and scared everyone, then the lights came on and people exited.  This was accepted in those times as a form of entertainment. Since this incident, people have claimed that the Jersey Devil may be a band of escaped kangaroos. Kangaroos require a warmer climate than south Jersey has to offer, but they are smart creatures and the idea that they have their own means for finding warmth during the snowy months is not out of the question either. Abandoned buildings, or cave entrances could be host to these animals; to name a couple.

Pros - Kangaroos do have resemblance to the Jersey Devil with several aspects such as its nose, face, ears, tail, hair, etc...  Kangaroos do bounce, similar to the way reports stated the Jersey Devil in doing the same.  See more information on this oddity in the oddities section here [link].

Cons- No screeching sounds.  No wings.  Without wings, hoofs, or red eyes, the Jersey Devil can never be told off as a Kangaroo.  Also, kangaroo’s legs are too long.  The Jersey Devil has never been reported to have long legs, front or back.
